Liver failure occurs when the larger parts of the liver are damaged beyond their repair and the liver is no longer able to function itself properly. Liver failure is considered to be a life-threatening condition which calls for urgent medical attention. In most of the cases, liver failure takes place gradually and over many years. However, according to the liver hospitals in Delhi, a more rare condition of liver failure known as acute liver failure occurs very rapidly, in some cases as little as 48 hours. This condition is difficult to detect in its initial stage.

What causes liver failure?

According to many liver hospitals in Delhi, the most common causes of chronic liver failure include the following:

  • Long term consumption of alcohol
  • Hepatitis B
  • Hepatitis C
  • Cirrhosis
  • Hemochromatosis, an inherited disorder which causes the body to absorb or store iron in larger quantities
  • Malnutrition.

The causes of acute liver failure, however, are different and these include the following:

  • Viruses that include hepatitis A, B, and C, particularly in children.
  • Acetaminophen overdose.
  • Reactions to various herbal medication and prescriptions
  • Ingestion of poisonous wild mushrooms.

Symptoms of liver failure:

The initial symptoms of liver failure are the ones which could be caused due to a number of conditions. This is the main reason why liver failure becomes difficult to diagnose in some bodies. The early symptoms of liver failure include problems such as loss of appetite, nausea, fatigue, and diarrhoea.

As the liver failure in the body progresses, the symptoms of liver failure become all the more serious, calling for urgent medical attention. All these serious symptoms include bleeding easily, jaundice, sleepiness, swollen abdomen, mental confusion or disorientation, and coma.

Treatment of liver failure:

According to liver hospitals in Delhi, if liver failure is detected at an early stage, acute liver caused because of an overdose of acetaminophen could be treated and all its effects could be reversed. Similarly, if liver failure is caused due to a virus, supportive care could be given in the hospitals to treat all its symptoms. In all such conditions, the liver can recover itself and get back to its healthy state.

If the failure of the liver is the result of any long-term deterioration, the initial treatment includes saving the remaining part of the liver which is able to function properly. If this is not possible, then the liver transplant is required. Thankfully, the transplant of the liver has become a common procedure which is successful in most of the cases.

How to prevent liver failure?

The best way to ward off the failure of the liver in the body is to restrict the risk of developing hepatitis or cirrhosis. As prevention is always better than cure.  It is therefore recommended taking the following steps to keep your liver healthy:

  • Get a hepatitis vaccine or a shot of immunoglobulin to prevent the condition.
  • Follow a healthy lifestyle and consume alcohol in moderation.
  • Practice proper hygiene as germs are mainly spread because of hands.
  • Do not handle any kind of blood or blood products.
  • Do not share any type of personal products with others.
  • Use protection while having sex and do not share needles with anyone.
